Naturalization Interview Preparation: Tips for a Successful Path to Citizenship

The naturalization interview is a significant milestone on your path to U.S. citizenship. It’s your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. civics, your ability to communicate in English, and your commitment to becoming a citizen. With the right preparation, you can approach your interview with enough confidence.

What to Expect at Your Interview

Your naturalization interview has two key components:

  1. Civics and English Test: You will be asked up to 10 questions about U.S. history and government, and you need to answer at least six correctly. You’ll also read and write a sentence in English to demonstrate your proficiency.
  2. Review of Your Application: A USCIS officer will review your Form N-400 application and ask questions about your background, travel history, and eligibility for naturalization.

Tips for Preparation

  • Study for the Civics Test

The USCIS offers study materials, including a list of 100 possible civics questions. Focus on understanding the key concepts rather than just memorizing answers. Flashcards, apps, and online practice quizzes are great resources to reinforce your knowledge.

  • Practice Your English Skills

Your ability to understand and respond in English will be assessed throughout the interview. Practice answering typical questions aloud, such as those about your background, and work on reading and writing sentences in English.

  • Organize Your Documents

On the day of your interview, bring:

  • Your green card (Permanent Resident Card).
  • A government-issued ID.
  • Travel records and other supporting documents, such as tax returns, marriage certificates, or court records, as applicable to your case.
